On May 11th 2018, the DAAD Information Centre Singapore in cooperation with TUM Asia organized an information seminar on “Doing a Doctorate – Research in Germany” in Singapore. The goals of this seminar were to provide an overview of the German research landscape, introduce young researchers and potential PhD candidates to study and research opportunities in Germany and present different funding opportunities.
The welcome address by the Head of the Science and Technology Department of the Germany Embassy Singapore was followed by a presentation about the German research landscape, the difference between structured and traditional PhD programmes and scholarship opportunities in Germany.
To give additional first hand insights, the Head of Education and Research (Chemistry) from TUM Asia in Singapore spoke about his experience of doing a doctorate in Germany.
The official part of the seminar concluded with a panel discussion about research career opportunities moderated by the Managing Director of TUM Asia. Panellists from Fraunhofer Singapore, the first Fraunhofer subsidiary in Asia and German professors from the National University of Singapore, the Singapore Management University and the Technical University of Munich enjoyed a lively discussion with the participants about the prospects of completing a doctorate and research careers in Germany.
At the following dinner reception, the participants had the chance to converse further and establish new contacts. This event showed clearly that there is a high demand for further information about research opportunities in Germany and to strengthen the existing cooperations between Germany and Singapore.
